Art By C Tolpo Carolyn Tolpo Smith, Painter
I am attracted to the flourishing way renewal greets people as mindfulness meets Art.
My paintings dip into a meeting place where confluence occurs - a place full of asthetic conversation between subject, artist and viewer in a big picture mesh of dimensional texture - where refreshing rapports brush between life, art and beauty.
Art has always been part of my life. Art is more than meets the eye.
Explorations began in a family of artists in Illinois, USA, with special earliest awareness at the base of the Yellowstone Grand Canyon Lower Falls - first foods included trout. As a student, recognition in poetry, theater, dance, music and art, led to earning a BFA degree from the University of Hawaii. The choice by the late Rev. Mitsuo Aoki, UH Department of Religion, to recognize Art for his class Final requirements; Nature, including hikes over active Volcanoes; those Life experiences such as witnessing the first Lunar landing by Man, and the fluid-flow of Water ever near - all spurred an artist's muse and connections to influence Art by C. Tolpo.
Art by C.Tolpo studio works Hawaii to Florida while in partnership with Tolpo family artists , since 2009.
Honolulu Newspaper, interview snips about Carolyn Tolpo Smith, 1998
...Where did she get her inspiration? She credits her parents...both
painters/sculptors with raising her in a creative, supportive environment.
"..I cannot remember when they and the people around me were not making some form of art- music, drama, dance, puppetry..”
...the official portrait of Governor John A. Burns..."It was a dream come true," she recalls, because one of her goals was to follow in her father's footsteps by doing official portraiture.
..Carolyn sees portraiture (as well as other art, for that matter) as capturing something in the
subject ...and holding that something still for a moment, so viewers can get to know it...a kind of human kinship to spirit, something which Carolyn finds very precious. It is that something which is not tangible but is found in all the arts, Carolyn points out...when things click...when the viewer sees the connection in a piece of art and exclaims, “Yes!”.. she refers to ”that something we are relating to ..” as what she calls “the art part.”
In the 1980‘s, in art education she developed curriculum co-ordinated presentations for Pre-school and the New York Artist-in-Schools Program for Elementary Schools. Volunteering involved: 1997 presentations for Perspective in Arts lecture and initial Fiddling Workshops for Punahou School high school students in Honolulu.
In 1998 - 2008, accepting a Columnist position, she authored, The Artpart, column for newspaper print and later for online commentary as well. She self-published a book dedicated to her parents in 2006 about Art and Life connections: Beauty Secrets For Life The Artpart
